So, let's continue this series of articles about setting up a little, sigle server, all-in-one, ELK environment to draw nice dashboards about our CISCO labs. In this third article I'm going to dump my notes, and configuration for Logstash.
Find previous articles here: - part1 talks about overall ELK, environment, repositories and so Same as on the second article, in this one I just focus on the matter, asuming that environment is ready, and further, that elasticsearch is up and running. Again, once we got the repo ready, installing ELK software components is pretty straightforward, in this case:. First, at the very system level, Logstash may have permission problems when accesing the log files present in the filesystem.
Permissions are something we, Linux admins, do have to always keep in mind Logstash process runs as the logstash user, and an easy way to get access to most log files at Debian's default log folder is to add logstash user to the adm group probably this is not the best or secure way to do this.
I have to say that I have dealt with problems in the past, regarding logstash and permissions, with services storing log files on folders whith certain sets of ownerships and permissions I remember Icecast2 now, for example It is the translate plugin, which without it some things on some of my filters do not work, and make even logstash to refuse to start.
I guess it is not necessary here, I'm not sure, but it doesn't hurt anyways if it is not strictly needed by our setup. As you see, installing plugins is also very easy:.
Basically I'll download the database file, uncompress it, put it in a proper location and set the necessary permissions:. The actual filtering of every log line that logstash process performs includes, very often although not necessarely only a process of matching the log line against a candidate pattern, and more specifically, a grok pattern.
This is both, because the grok regular expression language is a very handy way to match a log line identifying its pieces of information substrings, and because the grok-filter plugin is included and enabled by default in logstash install. Upon match, the grok syntax, and the logstash grok-filter plugin, enables logstash to decompose the original log line into all of its components, as independent yet still related to a same event pieces of information, that can be classified, converted from text to an integer or float, so statistics can be performed, for instanceexpanded gettin aditional geolocation data from an IP addressand so.
Since grok match patterns could be very very long and complex, the way to mitigate this is the usage of grok's nested patterns capability.
For example, if you know several of your services, although generating different log-line structures as a whole, do share a common partial structure a common timestamp, for exampleyou could write a grok-pattern separatelly for just that common part, and call it from the other patterns. Take a look here it is probably outdated to see a common, ready to use, set of patterns available in logstash, and how they're all build from very simple to more complex ones, by reusing the code.
You can look and find CISCO logstash patterns around, but the ones I tried didn't work to me, were very heavy, or for models I didn't own, so, as often, I ended up writing my own patterns. There are several tools that help writng grok patterns, but I would like to mention this web application: The Grok Constructor. So, I wrote two patterns, one that matches log lines generated by myand another for my PIXe, and put them in an appropriate location with correct permissions:.
Using a text editor nano, vi, etc So, configuration files remain just configuration, not matching, clean and homogeneous in format. Logstash configuration can, like many other services, read its configuration from either a single file, or from a set of separate ones. The difference is that here, in logstash, order matters, since the configuration not only defines how does logstash reads incoming logs inputs and where does it sends them at the end of the processing outputsbut also defines a set of filters, that conditionally apply to the currently processed line or not.
In other words, the configuration has or can have somehow some programmatical logic. For instance, an early filter may be use for early classification and detection of the kind of log line, adding appropriate tags, so only selected filters are executed afterwards if those tags are present.
The reading of the files will be done alfabetically. So, a common practice is to name the files there with starting numbers to control the order. I also like the practice of putting actual configuration files in a separate folder and 'enable' them as needed by linking them from the config folder. I also like the practice of using the first file, inputs. Then, I use a different file for every service this logstash instance is processing, from 11 to 98, XX-someservice.
So, in the following sections I'm going to show the contents of the 5 files that will involve this setup, one by one.Panos Kampanakis. The ELK stack is a set of analytics tools.

Elasticsearch is a flexible and powerful open source, distributed, real-time search and analytics engine. Logstash is a tool for receiving, processing and outputting logs, like system logs, webserver logs, error logs, application logs and many more.
Kibana is an open source Apache-licensedbrowser-based analytics and search dashboard for Elasticsearch. ELK is a very open source, useful and efficient analytics platform, and we wanted to use it to consume flow analytics from a network. The flows were exported by various hardware and virtual infrastructure devices in NetFlow v5 format.
Then Logstash was responsible for processing and storing them in Elasticsearch. Kibana, in turn, was responsible for reporting on the data. Given that there were no complete guides on how to use NetFlow with ELK, below we present a step-by-step guide on how to set up ELK from scratch and enabled it to consume and display NetFlow v5 information.
Readers should note that ELK includes more tools, like Shield and Marvelthat are used for security and Elasticsearch monitoring, but their use falls outside the scope of this guide.
For our example purposes, we only deployed one node responsible for collecting and indexing data.
We did not use multiple nodes in our Elasticsearch cluster. We used a single-node cluster. Experienced users could leverage Kibana to consume data from multiple Elasticsearch nodes.

Logstash comes with a NetFlow codec that can be used as input or output in Logstash as explained in the Logstash documentation. Below we will create a file named logstash-staticfile-netflow. Logstash can consume NetFlow v5 and v9 by default, but we chose to only list for v5 here.
Note that in the configuration file above, if the source of the NetFlow is one of The rest of the collected data that come from different sources will be stored in indices named logstash-YYYY.
That way we use different indices for NetFlow from our sources of interest. As we will see later, the index will be use in Kibana to only view logs of interest. Separate daily indices also make it easier to purge data. The Logstash configuration file can then be tested for errors and used in Logstash to listen for NetFlow and export it to Elasticsearch. Logstash can also be run using the web option that enables both the agent and the Logstash web interface in the same process. We will not be using the Logstash web interface in our deployment. After running Logstash with the NetFlow config file, if Logstash sees NetFlow records on UDP port it will store the data in the indices defined in the configuration file.

I have been using logstash with gelf already and wanted to check out fluent input mainly due to TCP based docker log-driver for fluent as opposed to UDP only gelf. My configuration for testing is this:. An error occurred. I also disabled the fluent codec and sent fluent logs and logstash properly errors there as well and parses the fluent msgpack as message field of a regular TCP event as expected.
Received an event that has a different character encoding than you configured. I have no other ideas, has anybody run into this issue or have any ideas on how to debug further? I also tried using a fluentd with fluentd-output-gelf plugin as a forwarder to logstash-gelf and that works fine as well. As far as I can tell, the issue is somewhere between logstash fluentd codec and pipeline.

When Logstash and Syslog Go Wrong
It worked just fine. When the data comes in over the TCP port it writes the properly formatted data to the output file as expected in the file output plugin but no data is showing up in Kibana when I choose the given index.
The data is definitely being grok'd properly as it is, as I mentioned, appearing in the file plugin output. Kibana sees the "odataindex" index and the fields such as oid, oclientip, oua, etc. It just doesn't return any data when I do a search. Any ideas?
The data coming in was timestamped timestamp key via the 'date' plugin with the original open date, NOT the time of the, via TCP port to elastic, insertion event; thus, no data was showing and I had no idea that by default only the past 15 minutes of data based on timestamp were displayed. If I had read the part about the time constraint I would have known.
So I just adjusted the time to go back infinite years and saw my data. So, if anyone else is having this problem, it's probably because you created a time-dependent index and have not clicked the 'time' button in the top right corner and changed the time frame. I still have not been able to determine why the data is not displaying in Kibana thru ElasticSearch, but the output goes out the file output plugin just fine to a local text file on the server.
